SPEEA ACE is a non-profit that supports the development of the aerospace workforce in Washington state. They offer tuition assistance and childcare scholarships to students pursuing STEM degrees who are interested in aerospace careers.  They also offer free technical and professional development training events open to the public.

Hear about problem spaces related to sustainable aviation from corporate leaders, then participate in ideation sessions on solutions. Students will also have the chance to participate in a Pitch Challenge at the end of the workshop with the chance to win a prize for Best Pitch! 

Solutions include hardware, software, and AI; think inside the plane (design, optimization, materials, fuel) and outside the plane (infrastructure, supply chain, and more).

2024 EERI & Seismic Design Competition kickoff!

Hello All!

Back for our second year, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is again building our team for Student Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI)’s undergraduate and graduate student group and the undergraduate Seismic Design Competition (SDC). Come join this info session to learn about EERI and the seismic design competition and join the team! 

This undergraduate and graduate student group will offer technical seminars, networking and leadership opportunities, national seismic design competition, social events, K-12 outreach, membership to a key professional organization, and more – there is something for everyone! Official rules for the competition will be released soon, marking the start of the design competition. 

So, if you are interested in earthquakes, structural or geotechnical engineering, want to participate in a student organization, and/or want to see our SDC building from last year, join us for our kickoff meeting next Thursday, October 3rd at 1 PM in More Hall, Room 110 to learn more and see if you would like to be involved.

    • Drop-In Advising Hours: We have drop-ins on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11:00am – 12:00pm. You can attend Drop-In Advising Hours either in-person (More 201) or remote via zoom.  Drop-in advising is intended for short, 5-10 minute advising appointments.  Details can be found on the calendar.

HDR $10k Scholarship and Paid Internship – 2025

Looks like our friends at HDR are offering a couple of VERY GOOD scholarships ($10,000 each) to students with demonstrated interests in transportation who will be graduating this year (i.e., seniors). If you are interested, please take a look at their flier attached here.

I do not have any additional information on this scholarship, so address any questions to the e-mail listed on the flyer.


HDR established a scholarship program in 2019 that focuses on graduate level students (or graduating undergraduates going to graduate school) interested in water engineering related fields. The scholarship program includes (2) $10,000 scholarships and paid internships.

A few guidelines are:

  • Graduate student, or undergraduate degree by spring 2025 and planning on attending graduate school
  • Willing to accept an HDR internship
  • Applications are due December 2, 2024

To provide support for those who work (or are interested in working) in the transportation industry, the WTS Puget Sound Chapter is kicking off our annual mentoring program. The October 2024 – May 2025 program is free and open to people of any gender and from any discipline within the transportation industry, including: planning, engineering, construction management, marketing, communications, operations, and more.

Compound impact of extremes: The 2023 Türkiye-Syria cascading earthquake hazards exacerbated by an atmospheric river (AR) precipitation event

Cascading earthquake hazards refer to a chain of secondary hazards triggered by an initial earthquake, including co-seismic and post-seismic rainfall-driven landslides, mudflows, and floods enhanced by sedimentation in channels. Two main earthquakes, Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6 occurred on Feb. 6, 2023 within the East Anatolian fault system nine hours apart.
