Update and request to advertise upcoming town halls

Hello,

Thanks again to everyone for your work on the AI task force! We had strong participation in the first town hall last week, and great engagement with the survey (~3000 responses, with the Office of Educational Assessment now going through those to analyze the results).

Next up are the town halls focused on the topics for the different working groups, with the Research town hall happening tomorrow. We would appreciate it if you could help us keep the momentum going in terms of engagement, by forwarding information about the upcoming town halls to your units. The details on the town halls (along with the recording of the last town hall) are located here: https://www.washington.edu/provost/2024/10/24/ai-town-hall-links/

Env and Water Seminar: Oct 31, 3:30, MOR 220: Paul Morgan, Landslide Dams, what are they and where will they happen next?

Dear CEE community,

Please join us this Thursday, October 31 at 3:30 in More Hall room 220 for the environment and water program seminar. This week Earth and Space Sciences PhD candidate Paul Morgen will talk about Landslide Dams. Please see Paul’s abstract and bio below.

You can find the fall program here: https://depts.washington.edu/watersem/

Landslide Dams, what are they and where will they happen next?:  A probabilistic approach to regional landslide dam susceptibility analysis

Paul Morgan

Earth and Space Sciences, UW

Landslides can form river dams that require rapid response to mitigate catastrophic outburst floods. In this talk I will discuss landslide dams, why we should care about them and present a workflow to map landslide dam formation susceptibility at a regional scale. I define a probabilistic dam formation domain (DFD) function that combines river valley width and landslide volume to efficiently determine the likelihood of a landslide damming a river or ‘damability’. We combine damability values with existing landslide susceptibility to find landslide dam susceptibility.  We verify and apply our approach to the Oregon Coast Range, USA and find high susceptibility in steep river headwaters, and in more resistant lithologies. We also estimate volumes of the potential dammed lakes and find that most rivers with high dam susceptibility are less likely to impound large lakes, because they have low drainage areas. However, widespread susceptibility, and the critical potential impacts from exceptionally large landslides suggest this hazard should be considered in the Pacific Northwest. The DFD function workflow is flexible to the addition of new data and can be applied more broadly to assess future landslide dam hazards.

REMINDER: Construction Career Fair on Tuesday, 10/29

Hi all,

I want to remind everyone that the Construction Career Fair (hosted by Construction Management) is coming up next week. Please go!

What: 2024 CM Career EXPO (CEE students are ALWAYS welcome to go and we do…in large numbers)

When: Tuesday, October 29th, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Where: HUB Ballroom (same place as CEE career fair)

Why go: there are LOTS of jobs and internships available here and they LOVE folks from our department

If you are at all interested in Construction as either a career or even just for an internship you MUST go to this career fair. There will be 103 companies there. That’s right, 103! Every construction company that does business here and some that do not will be at this career fair looking for new hires and/or internships. In years where our students commit to going to this career fair, they see as many, if not more, CEE students than CM students there. Let’s make that happen this year. If you went to the CEE career fair, go to this one too.

PERSPECTIVE

Let me offer some internship/job perspective: The construction sector (contractors, consultants that do construction management/inspection, and owners that hire folks to manage construction efforts) employs our graduates more than any other. By far. The following table shows the fraction of internships and jobs supplied by the construction industry to our students based on our end-of-year surveys. Even if you like structures right now, a construction internship with a heavy civil firm would be super-beneficial to you. Continue reading

CONSTRUCTION SCHOLARSHIPS: Beavers and Clark Construction Group Scholarships Announcement – Applications Due November 5th

Hi all,

Hope the first few weeks of class are going well for you! I am writing to let everyone know that there is a great scholarship opportunity for students interested in and involved with construction engineering. There are scholarships from the Beavers Charitable Trust and the Clark Construction Group available for award. The awards will be TWO $5,000 cash scholarships from the Beavers and TWO $2,500 cash scholarships from Clark. Awards will be given in November. Here are the application particulars:

REQUIREMENTS

  • The applicant must have completed an internship (or have an ongoing one) with a construction company. This is the big requirement – it does limit the applicant pool quite a bit. I am aware of a number of students who meet this requirement (e.g., Clark, Flatiron, Granite, Stacy and Witbeck, Kiewit, Skanska, Walsh, Sellen, Mortenson, and more). If you have had a construction company internship, we will find you and get you to enter…so do it voluntarily first. 😉
  • The applicant must be in good academic standing. This means not on academic probation and no history of academic misconduct.
  • The applicant must fill out an application (shocking) here: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8067529/2024-Beavers-Charitable-Trust-and-Clark-Construction-Group-Scholarships. This application involves you writing 1 page on your intern experience. So, it takes a bit of time to complete.

DUE DATE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH, 11:59 P.M.

APPLY HERE: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/8067529/2024-Beavers-Charitable-Trust-and-Clark-Construction-Group-Scholarships
