Hello,
I wanted to send a reminder that the WTS Puget Sound Chapter’s scholarships are due December 6th, 2024 at 11:59 PM.
We are offering 10 wonderful scholarships totalling over $50,000 to graduate and undergraduate, community college, and trade school women and non-binary students who are passionate about the transportation industry.
Please see attached for a flyer detailing our available scholarships, and a pdf of the application form. More information can be found on our website here: https://www.wtsinternational.org/chapters/puget-sound-seattle/scholarships
We are so excited to be able to offer these wonderful scholarship opportunities, and we greatly appreciate your support in spreading the word!
Dear CEE Community,
The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) UW Chapter’s Seismic Design Competition (SDC) team is excited to announce that we’re recruiting new members for this year, with several open positions and opportunities available!
At SDC, we design a building for a seismically active zone, focusing on architectural design, ground motion selection, and damping device implementation—all while maximizing the building’s usable space. As part of the design process, we’ll use SAP2000 to analyze and refine our building’s performance. After finalizing the design, we’ll construct a model using balsa wood, incorporating laser cutting technology this year for improved precision. Finally, the team will have the opportunity to attend the competition in person at the University of California, Berkeley!
Interested? Fantastic! Please fill out this form before our first club meeting this Thursday at 1:30 PM in More Hall, Room 110, where we’ll provide free pizza!
We’re excited to see you at our first meeting!
FYI to any graduate or undergraduate woman/non-binary student interested in transportation:
I was asked by a former student to forward this information to you. WTS is an organization that attracts, sustains, connects, and advances women’s careers to strengthen the transportation industry. Each year, their Puget Sound chapter offers a number of scholarships to women and non-binary students pursuing a career in the transportation industry. The best part is that there is ONE application to fill out and several possible scholarships (some are for undergraduate students, some are for graduate students). Those are excellent odds.
Apply here: https://www.wtsinternational.org/chapters/puget-sound-seattle/scholarships
Deadline: 6 December 2024
WTS (and other organizations) want to give you, students, money to complete your degree. They really want to help and reward you for your efforts. My experience recently is that there really aren’t that many students applying for these types of scholarships. So, your odds are probably better than you think. Most of these WTS scholarships require you to fill out a form and write some kind of personal statement (500 words). By my estimate, that’s about 1-2 hours of your time for a potential return of $3,000 to $10,000. There is even one award, the Professor Scott Rutherford Memorial Scholarship, that is named in honor of a recent UW faculty member and it is only open to UW students. I knew Scott. He was a great person and I know he would want you to apply.
Students,
The ISE department is offering a study abroad program in Leon, Spain! You will get credit for IND E 315 Prob & Stats for Engineers (everyone’s favorite class!) plus IND E 337 Intro to Manufacturing Systems, which is also a W class. Please see the attached flyer for details on upcoming info sessions.
Hello,
Hope you all are doing well. I am writing to you regarding the Women of Water Leadership Symposium which is taking place at the UW on February 25, 2025. The theme of the Leadership Symposium is “Resilient Voices: Telling our Stories” (Women of Water Symposium).
The symposium is over 2 days and we are hoping to have some students present their senior design projects on the second day (February 26, 2025). Students will have the opportunity to share their stories, learn from women in leadership roles in the water industry, and network with industry professionals! As presenters, students will have the opportunity to attend the entire symposium, and we have a great lineup of speakers.
Please fill out the Google Form attached if you are interested (Women of Water Student Presenter – Google Forms).
Students,
Hong Kong Science and Technology Summer Research Program: HKUST is a longstanding exchange partner of the College. Now, parallel to their summer exchange course offerings, they have created a STEM research track that places students with a project supervisor for 8 weeks.
Arcadia Abroad Strathclyde Summer STEM Research Program: Arcadia University facilitates STEM research placements at various universities in English-speaking countries. The University of Strathclyde is located in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland.
Arcadia Abroad KCL Summer Biomedical Research Program: King’s College London is located along the River Thames in London. Similarly to Strathclyde and HKUST, applicants will be matched to a specific project at the university.
Note that for all three of these programs, some 2025 projects are still being finalized. More will likely be added through the month.
You should always discuss project choices with an academic adviser to determine suitability. Additional prerequisites may apply to certain projects.
Hello!
The American Society of Civil Engineers is creating two more officer positions for Winter and Spring Quarter! We are looking for sophomores/juniors for these positions who wish to become integrated with the officer board of UW-ASCE for this and future years. This is a great opportunity to gain leadership and team skills, and you will have the opportunity to possibly take over my role as next year’s ASCE president.
The following two positions are listed below:
Communications Chair: You will be our direct link with the Department of Civil Engineering. You will reach out to companies and agencies for possible engagement. This engagement can come in the form of Lunch & Learns, site tours, or anything else that engineering firms have to offer.
Fundraising Chair: Any opportunities for either direct donations or fundraising events will be directed by you. You will work along side our treasurer to track the current finances of the club.
If you are interested, please fill out the form via the link below. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Students,
Looking for internships? The PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo) will be hosting an internship search party on Thursday, November 21st at 6pm in Savery 132. The event will kick off with summer internship information, resources for finding internships, and application tips. The session will then turn into a search party to give students dedicated time to find and bookmark internships they are interested in. Our goal is to help summer internships feel more approachable and get a head start on applying.
This event is the first of our Undergraduate Involvement series where we will help undergraduates on preparing for summer internships, provide application workshops, and provide on campus resources and opportunities in climate science with this event focusing on getting ahead of the applications cycle.
Snacks and an excel sheet organizer will be provided!
