About the topic: Did you know that mechanical systems including HVAC account for up to 40% of a building’s total energy use? As part of UW’s Sustainability Plan, UW has required all newly constructed buildings to hit high performance energy standards to hit net-zero energy goals by 2035. Join us for a look at the mechanical systems driving the energy performance of the University of Washington’s new Interdisciplinary Engineering Building, set to achieve LEED Gold certification. This talk will explore the design and integration of key systems, such as the building’s classroom and office air handler units, lab exhaust heat recovery system, and how these contribute to both the building’s efficiency and its LEED certification. The session will also cover how the building’s mechanical systems are integrated with the campus power plant, which is set to have its own upgrades and changes within the coming years.
About the speaker: Chelsea Guenette is a mechanical engineer with over a decade of experience, currently serving as an associate at PAE. She has contributed her expertise to diverse projects, including the UW buildings, laboratories, historic renovations, data centers, and healthcare facilities.
