Join the EERI Seismic Design Competition Team!

Dear CEE Community,

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) UW Chapter’s Seismic Design Competition (SDC) team is excited to announce that we’re recruiting new members for this year, with several open positions and opportunities available!

At SDC, we design a building for a seismically active zone, focusing on architectural design, ground motion selection, and damping device implementation—all while maximizing the building’s usable space. As part of the design process, we’ll use SAP2000 to analyze and refine our building’s performance. After finalizing the design, we’ll construct a model using balsa wood, incorporating laser cutting technology this year for improved precision. Finally, the team will have the opportunity to attend the competition in person at the University of California, Berkeley!

Interested? Fantastic! Please fill out this form before our first club meeting this Thursday at 1:30 PM in More Hall, Room 110, where we’ll provide free pizza!

We’re excited to see you at our first meeting!

WTS Women and Non-Binary students in Transportation Scholarships!

FYI to any graduate or undergraduate woman/non-binary student interested in transportation:

I was asked by a former student to forward this information to you. WTS is an organization that attracts, sustains, connects, and advances women’s careers to strengthen the transportation industry. Each year, their Puget Sound chapter offers a number of scholarships to women and non-binary students pursuing a career in the transportation industry. The best part is that there is ONE application to fill out and several possible scholarships (some are for undergraduate students, some are for graduate students). Those are excellent odds.

Apply here: https://www.wtsinternational.org/chapters/puget-sound-seattle/scholarships

Deadline: 6 December 2024

WTS (and other organizations) want to give you, students, money to complete your degree. They really want to help and reward you for your efforts. My experience recently is that there really aren’t that many students applying for these types of scholarships. So, your odds are probably better than you think. Most of these WTS scholarships require you to fill out a form and write some kind of personal statement (500 words). By my estimate, that’s about 1-2 hours of your time for a potential return of $3,000 to $10,000. There is even one award, the Professor Scott Rutherford Memorial Scholarship, that is named in honor of a recent UW faculty member and it is only open to UW students. I knew Scott. He was a great person and I know he would want you to apply.
