Undergrad research experience in the Rocky Mountains

Students,

Last summer two UW students participated in the summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) program at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (www.rmbl.org).  While most of the focus in biology, there are also projects focused on water and hydrology (including one to work with my research group), so CEE and EnvE students are encouraged to apply.

Meet Your New Adviser + Invitation to Fuel for Finals ☕

Hello CEE Undergrads,

I hope you all had a safe and restful holiday weekend.

My name is Marina Bydalek (she/her), and I wanted to introduce myself as the new Undergraduate Academic Adviser for the CEE department! Some of you may have known my predecessor, Lauren Lanum, who previously held this role.

Originally from northern California, I moved to Seattle three years ago to attend graduate school here at the UW. After I graduated, I worked in advising administration at Seattle University, but I just couldn’t stay away from this beautiful campus, so here I am again ✨ When I’m not working, you can find me doing embroidery or crochet, cuddling with my dog Laika, or accidentally killing yet another houseplant.

I will be advising for both the BSCE and BSENVE programs, but until I finish training, you may see me shadowing appointments with Brian. You can continue to send your questions to ceadvice@uw.edu and Brian or I will get back to you.

To celebrate the end of the quarter and provide some extra energy for finals, we’d love to see you at the CEE Fuel for Finals event: Continue reading

Clean Energy Bridge to Research Summer Program 2025

Hello,

We are excited to announce that applications open Sunday, December 15th, 2024 for the Clean Energy Bridge to Research (CEBR) Summer Program

Clean Energy Bridge to Research (CEBR) is a summer program supported by the University of Washington (UW) Clean Energy Institute (CEI), and local partners. The CEBR undergraduate research program supports a select group of undergraduates, community college students, and tribal college students to participate in authentic research in solar, energy storage, grid technologies, and systems integration under the mentorship of UW’s world-class faculty and grad students. Prior research experience is not expected! For more information on the program and how to apply, please visit:

ENGR 160 WIN 25

Hi All,

As briefly mentioned during yesterday’s adviser meeting, we’re offering two sections our career course ENGR 160 winter quarter. This course is intended for students who have been placed in their majors but are not yet enrolled in major coursework. This will also be a good course for first-year students who remain unclear about their major choices or other students who are unclear about their career pathways.

ENGR 160 “Engineering Career Fundamentals” is a 2-credit (CR/NC) course that dives into the principles and practices that will allow students to take their college experience and lay a foundation for a rewarding career. They will gain a complete understanding of how their coursework and activities play a vital role in landing internships and jobs. They’ll also learn how to write a great resume, prepare for an interview, effectively network and much more.

Student questions can be directed to: engrhire@uw.edu

Earth Lab Hourly Job Opportunity

Students,

This may be a good opportunity to practice your hydrology, coding and GIS skills.

Position: Hourly Student Position

Project: EarthLab Project: Fish, Fire, Food, and Floodplains: Healing Place and People

Overview:

We are seeking an hourly student position with strong coding skills (python and/or R) to assist with our EarthLab-funded project, Fish, Fire, Food, and Floodplains: Healing Place and People, led by Dr. Monika Moskal in the SEFS Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Lab. This project, co-developed with the Klamath Tribes and Applegate Forestry, addresses the interconnected challenges in the Upper Klamath Basin in south-central Oregon. Critical issues such as water shortages, toxic algae, endangered sucker fish, vulnerable salmon, and habitat degradation threaten the resilience of the ecosystem and the communities dependent on it. The project aims to inventory incised channels on the Klamath Reservation, enhance water quality and storage by reconnecting streams and floodplains, and strengthen ecosystem and community resilience to climate change through targeted restoration efforts.

Approach:

The student will work as part of a team to run existing modelling tools to meet these project goals. Methods include using recently acquired Lidar data to predict wetland locations and to run hydrologic flow models to identify streams and rivers as well as stream depth. This combined approach will help identify potential restoration sites and quantify the disconnect between streams and wetland floodplains.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply and improve spatial modelling workflows in a coding environment (python, R ).
  • Analyze geospatial datasets to support hydrological and ecological assessments.
  • Collaborate with team members to interpret results and refine models as needed.
  • Document workflow and findings for project transparency and continuity.
