2025 CoE Undergraduate Research Symposium– Applications Now Open!

Hi all,

Applications for the Undergraduate Research Symposium is now open, which will take place on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Students may present their research as a research poster or a 10-minute oral research presentation. Applications and additional information can be found here. The deadline to apply is Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 11:59 PM

This is our second year having a designated partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Research! This year, all College of Engineering students will self-identify the Area of Impact their research addresses. This will be a great way for students to showcase the interdisciplinary nature of their research as well as support ENGRUD students who are exploring different majors.

Env./Water Seminar: 01/16: Shahzaib Khan: Irrigation through satellite remote sensing

Dear CEE Community,

This week’s environment and Water Program seminar will be given by Shahzaib Khan, a final-year PhD student in Hydrology. Shahzaib will present his irrigation advisory system for managing surface water resources efficiently while provide reliable crop water.

Time and location: Thursday (1/16): 3:30, More 230.

Title: How We Can Optimize Surface Water Irrigation Systems Through Satellite Remote Sensing

Abstract:

In this study, we present a comprehensive framework specifically designed for water providers. The proposed irrigation advisory system aims to manage surface water resources efficiently, by identifying the water-deficit and water-surplus regions, to support robust irrigation practices amid changing climatic conditions. The framework employs satellite remote sensing-based Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) and Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration models to estimate the net water requirements of crops accurately. By integrating data from previous irrigation cycles, current and forecasted precipitation, and evapotranspiration-based water needs, the framework calculates the net water demand for various command areas within irrigation canal networks. The advisories generated on a weekly basis offer water providers data-driven insights, enabling them to make informed decisions about water allocation. These advisories quantify the specific water demands, thereby allowing for strategic Continue reading
