CEE Seminar: climate change and landslides

Dear UW community,

The Environmental and Water Program seminar series offered by the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department will resume this Thursday (01/09) at 3:30 in More 230.

Speakers this quarter will address the 4 grand challenges outlined in our CEE strategic plan in relation to their research.

Seminar abstract for this week is:

How will climate change impact landslides in the Cascades?: Knowns, unknowns, and uncertainties.

Erkan Istanbulluoglu, CEE

In snow-dominated mountain-belts, understanding how hydrology and landslide rates will respond to climate change requires the integration of climate science, hydrology, and geology. This talk will explore predicted changes in future landslide hazards in the North Cascades of Washington using a suite of models. Model limitations and future research needs will be discussed in a holistic perspective that integrates earth and environmental science with engineering methods.

I hope to see you there.

1/17 PCC UCo Environmental Opportunities for Undergraduates Event

Students,

Happy 1st week back! Join us next Friday from 3-4:30 pm in Gould 435 to learn about environmental opportunities and hear from speakers on environmental-related careers, internships, undergraduate research, and the Program on Climate Change. We will first discuss on-campus and career development opportunities through short presentations from Career & Internship Center, Office of Undergraduate Research, Program on Climate Change Advisor, and a NOAA Hollings Graduate Student. Afterwards, the event will transfer into a breakout tabling session to give attendees the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the presenters as well as environmental-affiliated RSOs.

This event is designed to provide our undergraduate community with resources and information to help build experiences and an education vital for climate sciences in graduate school and the professional world.

All undergraduates are welcome to attend, and light refreshments will be provided! We hope to see you there!

Climate Science Minor/Undergraduate Cohort Info for Environmental Undergrads

Students,

Interested in interdisciplinary learning, connecting with peers, and finding access to opportunities in climate science? The Program on Climate Change can help!

  • Join the PCC Undergraduate Cohort (UCo), an RSO for undergraduates interested in climate science from across the university to connect with professional development resources, experts in the field of climate science, and fellow climate-minded undergraduates. More information here: https://pcc.uw.edu/research/undergraduate-climate-cohort/
  • Join the Climate Undergraduates listserve to receive emails relevant to undergrads interested in working on the climate: https://mailman12.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/climateminor
  • Explore the Self-Directed Undergraduate Climate Education page. This resource can guide you in building an individual climate education to complement your interests and degree program. These independent pathways develop skills and climate context important for a climate-impacted future in many fields. https://pcc.uw.edu/education/self-directed-climate-ed/
  • Enroll in the Climate Science Minor. For those seeking a personalizable, interdisciplinary, educational program that broadens skills and understandings around climate science. Students are encouraged to meet with the Climate Science Minor Advisor, Miriam Bertram, for course planning because:
    • Each year new courses are offered across the UW that can be used to satisfy the requirements. The advisor can help you sort these out.
    • Take a foundational climate course (ESS 201 or ATM S 211) as soon as possible, preferably in your freshman or sophomore years.
    • Once you take a foundations course, you can take the capstone course, ATM S/ESS/OCEAN 475, offered once a year. More information and sign up to talk to the advisor here: https://pcc.uw.edu/education/undergraduate-minor/
