Meet Your New Adviser + Invitation to Fuel for Finals ☕

Hello CEE Undergrads,

I hope you all had a safe and restful holiday weekend.

My name is Marina Bydalek (she/her), and I wanted to introduce myself as the new Undergraduate Academic Adviser for the CEE department! Some of you may have known my predecessor, Lauren Lanum, who previously held this role.

Originally from northern California, I moved to Seattle three years ago to attend graduate school here at the UW. After I graduated, I worked in advising administration at Seattle University, but I just couldn’t stay away from this beautiful campus, so here I am again ✨ When I’m not working, you can find me doing embroidery or crochet, cuddling with my dog Laika, or accidentally killing yet another houseplant.

I will be advising for both the BSCE and BSENVE programs, but until I finish training, you may see me shadowing appointments with Brian. You can continue to send your questions to ceadvice@uw.edu and Brian or I will get back to you.

To celebrate the end of the quarter and provide some extra energy for finals, we’d love to see you at the CEE Fuel for Finals event: Continue reading

REMINDER: CEE Career Fair is Wednesday, 10/16 from 1:30 – 4:30 in the HUB Ballroom

Students,

I am hoping you already know, but the CEE Career Fair is this Wednesday!

What: CEE Career Fair

When: Wednesday, October 16th, 2024 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Where: HUB Ballroom

Why go: Get a job, get an internship, meet people in industry

In the last few years, 30-50% of our internships were gotten via a career fair contact. There are so many jobs and internships available there that you really must go. Even if you think you are not qualified (you really are). Please take the time to prepare for this career fair and then just go and CRUSH IT. I cannot overemphasize how important it is to attend this career fair. There are 95+ companies that want access to YOU. Give them what they want and get what you want.

Steve’s pick-to-click companies: I like them all! But, if you don’t know where to start, check these out…

  • Environmental: Anchor QEA. Lots of great restoration work in the PNW. One of their principals is a hard-core skater (and super engineer).
  • Everything civil: Coughlin Porter Lundeen. They have been hiring our graduates for years. No wonder they’re so good!
  • Transportation: Perteet. I used to work there. Last century. They hire our grads all the time.
  • Construction: Skanska, Hamilton, Goodfellow Bros. (they work in Hawaii too!), Graham Contracting, Granite, Kiewit, Keller North America, Walsh.
  • Water: RH2. They hire environmentals and civils from UW. Some of our best have gone here. Continue reading

CEE Seniors – Apply to Graduate Now!

Hello CEE Seniors,

If you plan to complete your BSCE or BSENVE degree in Autumn 2024, Winter 2025, Spring 2025, or Summer 2025, it is time to apply to graduate!

Here are the steps we need you to complete:

  1. Run a fresh degree audit (DARS) and carefully review your remaining requirements – make sure you account for each one. When you register for you final quarter, your DARS must show that all requirements are either completed or in progress:

UW will not grant your degree unless your DARS shows that all requirements have been met when your final grades are posted:

  1. Update your MyPlan so that it reflects your plan for completing your degree. If you’re unsure of the exact courses you’ll take, it’s okay to use placeholder classes as shown on the sample 4-year plan on the BSCE/BSENVE degree sheets. If you’ve taken courses outside of UW that you plan to use toward your degree, please be sure that your most recent official transcript has been sent to the UW Admissions Office. You will also want to use our CEE projected course list when planning your future CEE courses.
  2. After reviewing your DARS and MyPlan, complete the google form at your earliest convenience and we will submit an online graduation application to the UW Registrar on your behalf. The form will provide a place for you to ask questions or point out any concerns you may have:

Welcome to AUT24! Important Updates and Save the Dates!

Hello CEE Majors,

I’m writing today to touch base, provide some important “Save The Dates” and provide some expectations as we move into AUT24.

1. CEE Advisor Availability: The first thing I want to address is the fact that we are down a CEE undergraduate adviser with Lauren Lanum’s departure.

This means that my capacity is going to be limited for the first few weeks of the quarter so I need to prioritize those students who have urgent questions related to AUT24.

If you have urgent AUT24 questions, you can schedule an apt using my booking calendar (or if those times don’t work, please email ceadvice@uw.edu with your ID number, your availability, and a summary of your questions.

For those of you who need to meet with me to plan WIN24 and beyond, we will have plenty of time prior to WIN25’s Oct 31 registration date.

You can find drop-in advising hours/instructions on the CEE Undergraduate Advising Calendar (T/W 11-12pm…they start next week) and my booking calendar will be updated very soon: https://www.ce.washington.edu/current/undergrad/advising

2. Canvas: You should now have access to our CEE Undergraduate Resources canvas page. Continue reading

CEE Ugrad Advising Update and Summer Availability

Dear CEE Undergraduate Students,

I am going to be out of the office until early September 2024 with limited access to email. If at all possible, please hold your emails and questions until after Labor Day.

That said, we will have staff keeping an eye on the ceadvice@uw.edu email if you have anything that you feel cannot wait until September.

To assist while I am away, I have provided some common links and resources that may be able to help you answer some of your questions:

Thank you and I will be in touch as we get closer to AUT24!

-Brian

Congratulations and Farewell to Lauren Lanum!

Dear CEE Community,

I am writing to share the bittersweet news that Lauren Lanum will be leaving UW and CEE to start her next chapter in Vancouver, WA.

Lauren and her husband have just purchased a new home and Lauren will be staring a new advising position at Clark College!

Lauren was hired by CEE as Program Coordinator in 2019 and was promoted to Undergraduate Academic Counselor in 2021.

Since her arrival, Lauren has made a huge impact in CEE, streamlining many of our processes and helping countless students reach their goals and overcome obstacles. She has also been an active member of the UW advising community as a member of AEP, leading their advising basics seminar for the past two years.

Lauren has been an amazing team member and a strong advocate for our students and I cannot begin to tell you how much she will be missed.

To send her off in style, we will be hosting a dessert potluck in More Hall Room 219 on Tuesday, August 6th from 3-4pm.

Lauren’s official last day at UW will be Aug 15, 2024. Continue reading
