CEE Commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Dear CEE Community,

This week started and continues with the media full of news, discussion, and analysis of the horrific acts of racial violence that occurred over the weekend in Buffalo, NY. If you are Black, a member of another racial or ethnic group targeted by replacement theorists, or a member of an under-represented group in CEE, please know that YOU ARE VALUED MEMBERS OF THE CEE COMMUNITY. Know also that CEE is committed to, and taking action to achieve, a Just, Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive community. This most recent event is a reminder of how important our JEDI activities are and that we must continue to invest time and energy in these activities so we can accomplish our goals.

For all, and especially those most affected by this event, please take time to reflect, to mourn, and to recover. Please support your colleagues and help each other to get through this tragedy. CEE and UW support services are available to help:

GSAB Spring Quarter Drop-in Hours

Dear CEE students,

Have questions or concerns about department happenings? Want to get GSAB’s perspective on your thoughts? Come to the GSAB student-only drop-in hour to hang out, discuss departmental issues, or just catch up. These drop-in hours are informal and can be used to address any needs that arise on a given day. Break-out rooms can also be made available for people who would like to discuss an issue one-on-one with a GSAB member.

The Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) will resume weekly student-only drop-in hours on Tuesdays from 3 – 4 PM for the remainder of spring quarter. Emails will be sent out on Mondays for location (virtual or, if in person, location on campus).

Tomorrow, May 10th will be virtual. Join at this zoom link:  https://washington.zoom.us/j/97764346451.

We look forward to building up our CEE student community with you all!

Geotech Planning for Undergraduates: Grad Courses and Advising

Hi CEE Majors,

We wanted to provide you with some guidance for AY 22-23 if you are interested in Geotechnical Engineering.

There is one undergraduate level course, CEE436 Foundation Design, that you likely are aware of but you are also able to take graduate level courses with instructor’s permission.

We also recommend that you schedule an apt with an adviser if you are planning to take graduate level courses so we can discuss how they work with your undergraduate degree.

We have also included the slides from the Geotech Mentoring Session a few weeks ago.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us or to the Geotechnical Faculty directly.

CEE Undergraduate Weekly: AUT22 Registration Guide | Reminders for Graduating Seniors

CEE Undergraduate Weekly (4.29.22)

Hello CEE Majors–

There is a lot coming up over the next couple of weeks so we wanted to touch base to make sure you are prepared for AUT22 Registration. Please read through this entire email.

Graduating Seniors

If you are graduating in SPR22, your refreshed degree audit should show that “all requirements are met if in progress courses are completed” and your graduation date at the top of your audit should read: SPR 2022. If your audit is showing that you are missing requirements or you do not see your graduation date listed, please let us know ASAP. Also, the RSVP for the CEE Graduation Celebration and additional details will be sent out soon!

AUT22 Registration

  • AUT22 Registration is just around the corner with Period I starting on Friday, May 6th.
  • The AUT22 time schedule is now up so if you have not started planning, now’s the time!

  • Please keep in mind that all CEE course offered in AY 2022-23 can be found here: CEE Projected Course Offerings.
  • If you are interested in courses outside of CEE in WIN23 or SUM23, you will need to contact the department in question directly to find out when they are offered.

Rising Seniors

    • Hopefully you have attended our Faculty Mentoring Sessions over the last few weeks. The last session with the Environmental/Hydrology Faculty is happening tomorrow, Fri, 4/29 – 1230pm in More 221. (see the attached document to prepare for the session)
    • Now is also the time to start planning out your senior year and locking in your Technical Electives and E&S Electives.  To help with this, we’ve attached our senior year planning process to this email. Please take a look, add the courses you want to take into your MyPlan and let us know if you have any questions or want us to look over it for you.

Rising Juniors

Students who will have completed/will complete all prerequisites by the end of summer quarter should register for 300-level CEE courses in the fall. (see the Jr. year prerequisite courses marked with arrows on the BSCE/BSENVE degree sheets)

You will be registering for these courses on your own!

  • BSENVE Majors: The 300-level BSENVE courses are pre-arranged for the academic year as outlined in the Sample 4-year plan on the BSENVE degree sheet. The non-CEE classes on the sample schedule are suggestions. To identify which additional courses to take, we recommend running a fresh degree audit to identify your outstanding graduation requirements.  Your schedule may look different from the sample due to course availability, course conflicts, or need.

  • BSCE Majors: The 300-level BSCE courses are pre-arranged for the academic year in “tracks”  (Track 1 or Track 2) as outlined in the Sample 4-year plan on the BSCE degree sheet.

You will need to self-select either Track 1 or Track 2. The two tracks consist of the same 8 courses, staggered to maximize our lab space. When choosing a track you may choose the track with the classes you are most excited to take or the track with the schedule that works best for you.

      • You can select either Track 1 or Track 2, but once you select a track, you must stay with that track’s courses for the entire academic year. This is important in order to avoid time conflicts with required courses in future quarters.

      • When registering for your CEE 3XX track courses, please carefully read the notes listed under each lab section (see online Time Schedule).  It is extremely important that you register for sections approved for your track. (We closely monitor who has registered for which track so that we can maximize enrollment and minimize time conflicts for all.)

      • Important:   Enter your Track courses for the year on MyPlan (available via MyUW).

CEE Undergraduate Student Guide

  • Please take a moment to review the Undergraduate Student Guide as it has important information that will help you navigate through the academic degree requirements, University policies, regulations, and procedures.

As always, make sure to keep your eye on the  Ugrad News Blog to keep up on job opportunities, internships, scholarships and other events/info sessions

CEE Undergraduate Weekly (4.20.22)

Hello CEE Majors,

We hope everyone is doing well. Things have been pretty quiet on our end in terms of student traffic so we assume the quarter is going well but if you need to talk, we are here for you.

One item that we are a bit concerned about is the attendance at the Senior Year Faculty Mentoring Sessions. We held two sessions on Monday (Hydrology and Transportation) and had a TOTAL of 10 students attend.

These sessions are your one formal chance during the academic year to receive mentoring directly from your CEE Faculty members. This is an opportunity to ask them questions relating to recommend courses, employment prospects, and how to navigate your CEE Degree and your interest area(s).

We have two sessions today and two next week so I hope you all plan to attend. Even if the area is not your #1 interest area, you will likely pick up some valuable information. I’ve included our mentoring session prep/expectations document as well as our Senior year planning document to this email. Please take a look at them in preparation and we will see you today at the sessions!
