Important Info for Rising CEE Seniors

CEE Rising Seniors,

There are a few important items that you should be aware of when preparing for your Senior Year (in addition to choosing your classes).

  1. FE Exam – Your CEE Junior year curriculum is set up to prepare you to take the FE Exam, which in turn provides you with your Engineer in Training License (EIT).  Having your EIT License on your resume when you attend career fairs is very beneficial. Information can be found here.
    1. Please note that the FE Exam schedule may be impacted by COVID19. It is our recommendation that you create an account and try to sign up to take the FE exam. If there are delays, you will be informed of them during the registration process.
    2. BSENVE Majors: Since the BSENVE program’s ABET accreditation is still in progress, you will not be able to take the FE Exam until the accreditation is finalized. We will let you know as soon as this is complete, hopefully in July-August 2020.
  2. Graduate School – If you are planning for graduate school, you should be preparing your application now, including taking the GRE.  UW’s grad school application deadline is December 15th. If you are thinking about applying to grad school, we highly recommend talking with both CEE Faculty and our Graduate Advisers.
  3. Letters of Recommendation – Whether you are going to graduate school or are on the job hunt, you will need letters of recommendation from CEE Faculty. We recommend choosing a few faculty members, either who you’ve taken classes with or who are in your area of focus, to reach out to. They are expecting to hear from you so do this sooner rather than later.  When you contact them, make sure you are providing them with enough information (who you are, your goals, next steps, etc.) that they can write you a personal letter.
  4. Senior Year Faculty Mentoring Sessions have begun (the next one is on Fri, 5/1). See the attached email from last week with more details. You can also see the session days/times on the Ugrad Advising Calendar.
  5. 2020-2021 CEE Scholarship Application is now open, please apply!

Rising Seniors – FE Exam: Sign Up Now! (Scholarships & Mentoring Session Info Too!)

This note is for CEE Rising Seniors (those currently taking 300-level CEE courses)

We want to give you advance information about the FE Exam, so that you will have plenty of time to look into it and to schedule it in spring quarter.

  • We strongly recommend that you schedule your Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam in spring quarter, selecting a test date in summer or early fall, before the autumn quarter picks up speed. The majority of CEE students take the FE exam by autumn quarter of their senior year. (Please be aware that you will be selecting test dates months in advance, so you should NOT wait until late summer to schedule your FE Exam.)

FE Exam: Sign up in Spring for Summer/Early Autumn Test Dates

This note is for CEE juniors (those taking 300-level CEE courses): I hope your winter quarter ended well, and I wish you a very relaxing and rejuvenating spring break.

I don’t want to rush you, but I wanted to give you advance information about the FE Exam, so that you will have plenty of time to look into it and to schedule it in spring quarter.

  •  Passing the FE will result in the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) license.  Having the EIT on your resume as you begin your job search greatly increases your desirability as a candidate for competitive positions, and it could also translate in a higher starting wage.
  • You will find detailed information about the FE/EIT registration process through the Washington State Department of Licensing website at dol.wa.gov/business/engineerslandsurveyors/engintraining.html. The FE/EIT is not an academic requirement for the BSCE degree, but is helpful as you enter the profession.

The basic process for undergraduate students scheduling the FE Exam is listed below:

  • Register for the exam at the NCEES website (http://ncees.org/exams/)
  • Select WA State in the Exam Registration box in the right column & follow the directions.
  • BSCE majors typically take the General Engineering and Civil tests of the FE exam.
  • After registering for the exam, you will be contacted by WA State & NCEES with further directions.

A good way to prepare for the exam is to review the Equations Reference book, provided on the NCEES website. (You may also be able to obtain copies from past seniors.)  NCEES also offers practice tests online. The UW CEE Department has a very high (approx. 90%) passage rate among first-time test takers.  Most of the students report that the 300-level CEE courses offers very strong preparation for the exam, so it is better not to wait too long to take the FE exam.

*IMPORTANT* Reminder: FE Exam

Autumn Quarter Advising Note

Welcome, new CEE majors!   Welcome back, returning CEE majors!

I hope you had a great summer and that you are excited for the new academic year.   I’ve heard from many students who had wonderful internships over the summer and from those who have already earned their EIT license.  Congratulations!

I look forward to meeting all the new CEE major (all 153 of you!) at the CEE Welcome and Orientation Day on Wednesday, October 1, from 4-6:30pm in the HUB North Ballroom.  I’ll send a separate reminder about that along with additional information for new majors in a following email.

Here are some reminders.  (Seniors: Please read an important note for you at the bottom of this list.)

  1. Check the CEE Undergraduate News Blog for postings on jobs & internships, scholarships, events, advising notes, and much more.   Check often or subscribe to receive posts by email or RSS feed so you can receive announcements and information of interest to CEE majors on a timely basis.
  2. Check the CEE Advising Calendar for drop-in advising times and event reminders for CEE students.
  3. Drop-in Advising?  Yes!  Undergraduate advisors Megan Reardon and I post our drop-in advising times on the CEE Advising Calendar, so you can see when we’re available.  Drop-in advising time is intended for quick questions that can typically be addressed in 10-15 minutes.
  4. Need an appointment?  You can self-schedule an appointment with me online at www.tinyurl.com/cee-appt-ugrad, or write to ceadvice@uw.edu.  (You’ll need log on with your Gmail or UW Google Apps account to use the online appointment tool. Be sure your calendar is set to Pacific Time.)
  5. Need an add code for a CEE class?  Request CEE add codes online at  www.tinyurl.com/ceeaddcodes.  Please allow at least one business day for a reply (although we will often reply within the day or a few hours.)
  6. Be sure that the UW has received your most up-to-date official transfer transcript(s) if you have coursework from outside the UW.  (Official transcripts should be sent directly to the University of Washington, Office of Admissions, Box 355852.)

Important: Attention Seniors!    If you intend to graduate during the 2014-2015 year, you will need to apply for graduation (i.e., “submit your application for degree”) with me.  When your autumn quarter registration is finalized, go online to sign up for a Graduation Application Session.  Once you sign up for a graduation application session, I will carefully review your file in preparation for our meeting.   Finally, if you have not done so already, schedule and take your FE Exam so that you can get the EIT license.

Have a great year!

Mariko
