Earth Lab Hourly Job Opportunity

Students,

This may be a good opportunity to practice your hydrology, coding and GIS skills.

Position: Hourly Student Position

Project: EarthLab Project: Fish, Fire, Food, and Floodplains: Healing Place and People

Overview:

We are seeking an hourly student position with strong coding skills (python and/or R) to assist with our EarthLab-funded project, Fish, Fire, Food, and Floodplains: Healing Place and People, led by Dr. Monika Moskal in the SEFS Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Lab. This project, co-developed with the Klamath Tribes and Applegate Forestry, addresses the interconnected challenges in the Upper Klamath Basin in south-central Oregon. Critical issues such as water shortages, toxic algae, endangered sucker fish, vulnerable salmon, and habitat degradation threaten the resilience of the ecosystem and the communities dependent on it. The project aims to inventory incised channels on the Klamath Reservation, enhance water quality and storage by reconnecting streams and floodplains, and strengthen ecosystem and community resilience to climate change through targeted restoration efforts.

Approach:

The student will work as part of a team to run existing modelling tools to meet these project goals. Methods include using recently acquired Lidar data to predict wetland locations and to run hydrologic flow models to identify streams and rivers as well as stream depth. This combined approach will help identify potential restoration sites and quantify the disconnect between streams and wetland floodplains.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply and improve spatial modelling workflows in a coding environment (python, R ).
  • Analyze geospatial datasets to support hydrological and ecological assessments.
  • Collaborate with team members to interpret results and refine models as needed.
  • Document workflow and findings for project transparency and continuity.

Graham Construction and Engineering information session: Friday, November 15th, 2024 @3:30

Hi all,

How are you doing after the two career fairs earlier this quarter? Well, if you have an interest in building things, here’s your opportunity. Graham is coming to More Hall to talk about their company and their open positions for interns and full-time hires. Please come. The pizza is good, the jobs are real, and time is convenient. It’s like a happy hour with jobs and internships!

What: Graham Construction and Engineering information session

When: Friday, 11/15/24 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Where: More Hall, Room 221

Food: Pizza provided

Why go: they have jobs and internships…and a great pizza lead in to the evening game vs. UCLA

Graham consistently hires our students as interns and full-time hires. They work on interesting local projects including the SR 520 Montlake project (they are just finishing that one up), the I-405/NE 85th interchange in Kirikland, as well as local high schools, business centers and residential complexes.

REMINDER: Construction Career Fair on Tuesday, 10/29

Hi all,

I want to remind everyone that the Construction Career Fair (hosted by Construction Management) is coming up next week. Please go!

What: 2024 CM Career EXPO (CEE students are ALWAYS welcome to go and we do…in large numbers)

When: Tuesday, October 29th, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Where: HUB Ballroom (same place as CEE career fair)

Why go: there are LOTS of jobs and internships available here and they LOVE folks from our department

If you are at all interested in Construction as either a career or even just for an internship you MUST go to this career fair. There will be 103 companies there. That’s right, 103! Every construction company that does business here and some that do not will be at this career fair looking for new hires and/or internships. In years where our students commit to going to this career fair, they see as many, if not more, CEE students than CM students there. Let’s make that happen this year. If you went to the CEE career fair, go to this one too.

PERSPECTIVE

Let me offer some internship/job perspective: The construction sector (contractors, consultants that do construction management/inspection, and owners that hire folks to manage construction efforts) employs our graduates more than any other. By far. The following table shows the fraction of internships and jobs supplied by the construction industry to our students based on our end-of-year surveys. Even if you like structures right now, a construction internship with a heavy civil firm would be super-beneficial to you. Continue reading
