Construction Career Expo – Online mixers start Monday, October 25th!

The first giant career fair of the year dedicated specifically to our interests begins with “virtual company mixers” on the week of 25 October 2021.

What: Virtual company mixers for the Construction Career Expo

When: 25-29 October 2021, various times (schedule here)

Where: online via Zoom meetings

Why go: hear about companies, what they offer, and what they are looking for

This will help set you up for the in-person Construction Career Expo on November 8th. These virtual mixers are Zoom meetings with multiple breakout rooms. Each breakout room is hosted by a different company. You can read the plans for them here. It looks like you get randomly assigned to a breakout room and then a company has about 20 minutes to talk to you, and then the next company shows up.

Personal recommendations for starters:

  • Skanska USA (Monday, 10/25 from 9-10:30)
  • Stacy and Witbeck (Monday, 10/25 from 2:30-4)
  • The Walsh Group (Monday, 10/25 from 4-5:30)
  • Howard S. Wright (Wednesday, 10/27 from 2:30-4)
  • Atkinson (Wednesday, 10/27 from 4-5:30)

Invitation for UGs to REU-Summer internships at Stanford

Are you looking for a summer undergraduate research opportunity in the Earth and environmental sciences? Stanford University’s School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences is looking for undergraduate sciences students to apply to SURGE (Summer Undergraduate Research in Geosciences and Engineering). SURGE gives students outside of Stanford the opportunity to work on earth, environmental sciences, and energy resource engineering research projects with a Stanford faculty for eight weeks during the summer—from June 20, 2022 to August 12, 2022. We encourage students who are seeking their first formal research experience to apply.

The areas of study offered through Stanford SURGE touch on a variety of disciplines, including geochemistry, geophysics, Earth systems, and energy resource engineering. We also encourage majors in chemistry, math, computer sciences, engineering, and biology who are interested in the Earth and environmental sciences.

Students receive room & board on Stanford’s campus, a $4,800 stipend, and a seven-week statistical thinking course, which amounts to approximately a $12,000 package. In addition to working closely with Stanford faculty and PhD students in a Stanford lab, students also present their research in front of the Stanford community at the SURGE research symposium, taking place in the last week of the program.

This information and more can be found on our website: https://earth.stanford.edu/dei/surge. Applications will go live on November 29, 2021 on our website and are due on February 4th, 2022. Feel free to email Isabel Carrera Zamanillo at micz@stanford.edu if you have any questions. Hope to see your application!

College of Engineering Student Advisory Council

The College is assembling the College of Engineering Student Advisory Council (COESAC) for the 21-22 academic year and we need to identify CEE department undergraduate representatives (One from BSCE and one from BSENVE, ideally).

The time commitment for students to serve on COESAC will be to attend meetings every other Friday from 3:30-5pm during the academic year. COESAC will provide valuable input on topics such as DEI work in the college, the IEB building, the engineering fundamentals, etc.

If you are interested in self-nominating for this opportunity, please email ceadvice@uw.edu as soon as possible!
