Career Fair Tomorrow Jan 23 – Some Helpful Tips

The CEE Career Fair is this Thursday (Jan. 23, 1:30 – 4:30pm, HUB Ballroom). To get the most of the career fair, check out these tips.

  • We now have 90 employers attending!  You can see the current list of attending companies at the bottom of the Career Fair website.
  • Upload your resume into Handshake for employers to preview.
  • Take a few minutes to watch the CC@E “Preparing for Career Fair Success” webinar: https://uw.joinhandshake.com/articles/10425
  • If possible, please try to leave your bags at home. We will have space for some bags but we will not have enough room for everyone who is in attendance.

How to prepare for the Career Fair?

      • Get your resume ready! (Need help? Visit the Career Center@Engineering).
      • Plan to bring plenty of resumes to the fair.
      • Plan your attire. (Business or business casual recommended. First impressions matter.)
      • Attend!  Whether you are freshman or a senior, whether you are looking for a career position, an internship, or not looking for a job right now at all, you should attend! This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the companies, become familiar with the field of civil and environmental engineering in general, and to develop and practice professional skills.
      • Tips on how to work a career fair:
        1. Prior to the fair, spend some time learning about the companies that will be in attendance.
        2. Identify the companies that you definitely want to talk with.
        3. When you get to the fair, expect it to be noisy and perhaps even a bit overwhelming at first. Take a moment to ground yourself: orient yourself to the layout of the room, see where there is congestion, long lines, etc.
        4. Get warmed up: start out at tables with few or no students lined up and simply practice greeting and talking to employer reps. Practice your elevator pitch. Introduce yourself, engage in conversation, and strive to learn one thing from your conversation. (Focusing on what the employer rep has to say with an intent to learn will help calm your nerves and make you appear as someone who is friendly, attentive, and eager to learn, a good candidate.)
        5. Reflect: How did you feel? Did you connect? How can you improve the experience?
        6. When you’re warmed up and ready, go visit the employers on your “important” list.

All of this should help you have a great career fair experience!
