Hi students,
As some of you may know Julian Yamaura and I (Steve Muench) hold professorships endowed by the Beavers Charitable Trust. Each year they give out 30+ direct scholarships of $10,000 each to their network of schools they support (UW is one of them!). They are asking for applications and the due date is 1/30/26.
What: Direct Beavers Scholarship (each one is $10,000)
Apply Here: https://app.smarterselect.com/programs/105083-Beavers-Inc–Beavers-Charitable-Trust
Due date: 30 January 2026
Professor recommendations: ATTENTION – these scholarship ALSO require TWO professor recommendations that are ALSO due on 1/30/26
Eligibility criteria that matter to you:
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student + U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
-
Must have the professional goal of achieving a career in heavy civil construction. You demonstrate this by doing one of the following:
-
Completed an internship in the heavy construction industry
-
Have an internship scheduled in the heavy construction industry
-
Minimum GPA of 3.0 on unofficial transcript
Our (Julian and Steve) advice for this scholarship:
The Beavers, whom we know quite well, are looking to support students that are intending to enter the heavy construction industry upon graduation. If that’s you, then go get this scholarship. Especially, but not exclusively, if you have financial need. If you are not sure you qualify, ask Julian Yamaura or Steve Muench. We can help you figure that out and we can always help you apply (and also be one or both of your recommenders).
- Who are The Beavers? They are not Oregon State. Read about them here: https://thebeavers.org/
-
What is “heavy civil” construction? Building stuff that are not buildings (all other things besides buildings).
-
Who is a heavy civil contractor? Many contractors specialize in heavy civil construction. Here is a list of Beavers member companies (all are heavy civil):

-
If you had an internship or will have an internship with one of these Beavers Companies then that meets the “professional goal” criterion. You can also meet it other ways, just ask us.
Aloha,
Steve Muench
