Help Fellow Students with Their College of Engineering Mental Health Survey

Thelonious Goerz, an undergraduate student in Sociology and a research assistant in HCDE, in collaboration with fellow student Dylan McKone, is asking for your help on a research project for the Mary Gates Symposium.

They are looking for undergraduates in CEE to take this short survey, which will take approx. 10 minutes. The project will be looking at undergraduate mental health in the COE to understand what it is like to be a student in engineering. What does mental health look like for you? What could be improved? Etc.

This survey is open until the end of the Winter Quarter (March 20th), after which the gift cards will be drawn and sent out.

This survey will be entirely anonymous and will not be shared with faculty, staff, or administration. Participants can enter into a drawing of four $25 gift cards.

Fill out the survey here.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Thelonious at tgoerz99@uw.edu and Dylan McKone at elodia17@uw.edu

UW EcoFest and EcoVillage Exhibition Invitation

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The central UW event will be EarthFest on Red Square, April 22 (Earth Day) from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This event will primarily be an exhibition space for groups across UW who can connect with attendees around sustainability, particularly through the lenses of action, equity, diversity and environmental justice.

UW Sustainability wants this to be an inclusive event, with a broad and diverse range of exhibitors and participants. They also want to make sure it will be an engaging and informative experience for our attendees.

Uw Sustainability is asking UW student groups, departments and other organizations interested in participating to fill out an Exhibitor Application, letting them know how they will connect with attendees. They are especially looking for groups who will provide attendees with a hands-on activity or knowledge they will take away from the event.

As part of the UW EarthFest, there will be a space to highlight experiential research and other forms of creative scholarship that transcend the boundaries of the campus and allow UW members to engage with other communities: EcoVillage. UW Sustainability invites UW student groups, departments, and other organizations to participate by showcasing artifacts, models, prototypes, and hands-on activities that can serve as elements of an imaginary ecovillage. The limits are your imagination!

Priority will be given to groups who apply by March 9, 2020.

See more information and apply here.

If you have any questions regarding EarthDay, contact Toren Elste at tee10@uw.edu. For information about the EcoVillage contact Isabel Carrera Zamanillo at micz@uw.edu

SARP is Looking to Recruits for the Launch Rail Team

The Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion (SARP) at UW is looking for student engineers to help design the launch rail subsystem for this year’s bipropellant rocket.

The application can be found here: https://forms.gle/6SBmaD4Sbd9CtgoP7.

This application will close Sunday January 19th at 11:59 PM

The student-engineers accepted for this position will report directly to the Ground-Ops Lead of the Propulsion Sub-Team on SARP. This Lead will define the parameters of the project and provide a framework for completing the project efficiently and to design requirements. This is a great opportunity to add to tangible experience and engineering development time towards starting one’s career. The involvement required by this position as a part of a student engineering team develops a skill set many higher-profile engineering firms look for in their preferred candidates for new graduate positions. The minimum requirements/skills SARP is looking for in this candidate include but are not limited to:

A commitment of at least 5 hours/week

  • -SolidWorks CAD design experience
  • Relevant structural engineering coursework or experience with an engineering team
  • Motivation to work independently to drive project deliverables or with a group when required.
  • Ability to respond and implement technical suggestions from stakeholders

The preferred requirements SARP is looking for in this candidate also include:

  • A commitment of at least 10 hours/week
  • Junior or Senior class standing
  • ANSYS FEA or other comparable structural analysis program experience
  • A systems level interest in the SARP 2019-20 high-powered rocket

Background Info:

The system provides a launch platform for a 16 foot, 175lb rocket to reach a 100 feet/second velocity velocity at the end of the 40 foot rail. The launch rail base is required to anchor into the ground and raise the length of the rail and rocket from horizontal to vertical under mechanical power, such as a winch or hydraulic system.

SARP is looking to redesign the base of this system to integrate with the existing sections of rail truss and accommodate a possible extension of this rail to allow for a longer rocket than years prior. Additionally, the base must be designed with portability and assembly in mind, maintaining a conservative profile in transit and being easily assembled in the field. This project must have a completed design review before the conclusion of Winter Quarter 2020 so that a test assembly and system integration can be run as early as mid-April 2020.

If you have any questions, email sarpuw@gmail.com.
