2026 Study Abroad Opportunity in Italy: “Roots of Resilience: Disasters, Community, and Sustainability in Southern Italy”

Information session for a study abroad opportunity in Rome and Sicily during summer 2026  to lean about community resilience to natural hazards:

Info session about “Roots of Resilience: Disasters, Community, and Sustainability in Southern Italy” (ENVH 490, 9 credits)—a month-long, interdisciplinary study abroad program set in Rome and Sicily. Sicily’s dynamic blend of environmental challenges and rich cultural traditions makes it an exceptional setting for exploring disaster resilience, while immersive learning prepares students for future leadership in global environmental public health and community sustainability.

During the info session, we’ll walk through program details, unique field experiences (including Mt. Etna, rural farms, and historic villages), service opportunities, and what you can expect academically and culturally. You’ll also discover how the course weaves together hazard science, public health, and community resilience through the lens of volcanic activity, climate impacts, and seismic risk.

This is a great chance to ask questions and see if the program is right for you.

Happy New Year, and Happy Winter Quarter.

Thursday, January 8, 2026 at 3:30 in More Hall 225

CEE PhD student Hannah Besso will talk about her 2025 study abroad adventures in Norway, where she studied snow and local culture. Hannah’s visit was sponsored by the Valle program, which sends UW CEE grad students to Scandinavian countries every year.  Any CEE grad student is welcome to apply (see link below), and this is your chance to find out first hand what a Valle experience is like.  Hannah is the recipient of best-conference presentation awards and is featured in the UW recruitment video — she’s an excellent public speaker, and I highly recommend this seminar.

We have an excellent speaker line-up for Thursdays all quarter, so mark your calendars: Winter Quarter Seminar Schedule:  https://depts.washington.edu/watersem/

Engineering Rome 2026 First Information Session

Ciao studenti,

The first information session for Engineering Rome 2026 will be held on Tuesday (that’s TOMORROW if you’re reading this on Monday).

What: Information Session for Engineering Rome 2026

When: Tuesday, 30 September 2026 at 12:30 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.

Where: More Hall, Room 110

What: come find out about studying abroad in Rome in late summer 2026

What is Engineering Rome?

Engineering Rome is a UW Exploration Seminar that covers Roman and Italian engineering over a range of 3,000 years from Ancient Rome to the present day.
It consists of one 5-credit course, CEE 409 Engineering Rome, which takes place in two sessions. First, a once-per-week orientation session meets in Spring 2026 to provide background information, and program orientation. Second, an in-depth session meets in Rome, Italy at the UW Rome Center for 24 days during the 2026 Summer-Fall quarter break (class meeting period: 31 August to 24 September 2026).
How do I get more information on Engineering Rome?
Two things:
  1. Come to an information session. First one is 9/30 (see above), second one is 10/24. Others to be announced.
  2. Follow us on Instagram at engineeringrome. We announce stuff there.

Currently, we are recovering from a website hack (probably the Carthaginians), but we’ll be back soon with a flood of information there.

How can I apply for Engineering Rome?

Hang tight. Applications for Early Fall courses (like Engineering Rome) usually go live on the UW Study Abroad site sometime in mid-November. So, if you look for us there, you won’t find us…yet. Applications are due 15 February 2025, and selection is announced by 1 March 2026.

Ciao,

Steve Muench

New Resource: Global Funding Opportunities at UW

The Office of Global Affairs has created a new resources for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies or research abroad:

Global Funding Opportunities

This list is updated regularly as new opportunities become available. Application deadlines change color as they approach, and expired opportunities are automatically removed, so you can be sure that the opportunities on this list are still open!

Study Abroad for Rising Sophomores: Deadlines Extended

This study abroad information is most relevant for rising sophomores who are ahead in their requirements, with enough room to take non-engineering courses for at least one quarter. Engineering students often use these experiences to fulfill GenEd requirements, improve a second language, or work towards a minor.

There are several study abroad applications still open for Winter ’26 and Spring ’26. These are non-engineering programs with deadlines around October/November. A good example is CIEE, with a flexible date system allowing students to only be away for one quarter at UW (several countries available at that link).

Of course, any student who plans to study abroad should be in close contact with their adviser to make sure it fits within their academic plan! Feel free to also email Sarah Pauling at spauling@uw.edu to talk through options, look through resources here, or sign up for the CoE abroad mailing list.
