Study Abroad in Berlin with ME! Info Session Dec 3rd, 130pm

A new study abroad program for Summer 2026 is here!

Engineering Rome 2026 First Information Session

Ciao studenti,

The first information session for Engineering Rome 2026 will be held on Tuesday (that’s TOMORROW if you’re reading this on Monday).

What: Information Session for Engineering Rome 2026

When: Tuesday, 30 September 2026 at 12:30 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.

Where: More Hall, Room 110

What: come find out about studying abroad in Rome in late summer 2026

What is Engineering Rome?

Engineering Rome is a UW Exploration Seminar that covers Roman and Italian engineering over a range of 3,000 years from Ancient Rome to the present day.
It consists of one 5-credit course, CEE 409 Engineering Rome, which takes place in two sessions. First, a once-per-week orientation session meets in Spring 2026 to provide background information, and program orientation. Second, an in-depth session meets in Rome, Italy at the UW Rome Center for 24 days during the 2026 Summer-Fall quarter break (class meeting period: 31 August to 24 September 2026).
How do I get more information on Engineering Rome?
Two things:
  1. Come to an information session. First one is 9/30 (see above), second one is 10/24. Others to be announced.
  2. Follow us on Instagram at engineeringrome. We announce stuff there.

Currently, we are recovering from a website hack (probably the Carthaginians), but we’ll be back soon with a flood of information there.

How can I apply for Engineering Rome?

Hang tight. Applications for Early Fall courses (like Engineering Rome) usually go live on the UW Study Abroad site sometime in mid-November. So, if you look for us there, you won’t find us…yet. Applications are due 15 February 2025, and selection is announced by 1 March 2026.

Ciao,

Steve Muench

New Resource: Global Funding Opportunities at UW

The Office of Global Affairs has created a new resources for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies or research abroad:

Global Funding Opportunities

This list is updated regularly as new opportunities become available. Application deadlines change color as they approach, and expired opportunities are automatically removed, so you can be sure that the opportunities on this list are still open!

Study Abroad for Rising Sophomores: Deadlines Extended

This study abroad information is most relevant for rising sophomores who are ahead in their requirements, with enough room to take non-engineering courses for at least one quarter. Engineering students often use these experiences to fulfill GenEd requirements, improve a second language, or work towards a minor.

There are several study abroad applications still open for Winter ’26 and Spring ’26. These are non-engineering programs with deadlines around October/November. A good example is CIEE, with a flexible date system allowing students to only be away for one quarter at UW (several countries available at that link).

Of course, any student who plans to study abroad should be in close contact with their adviser to make sure it fits within their academic plan! Feel free to also email Sarah Pauling at spauling@uw.edu to talk through options, look through resources here, or sign up for the CoE abroad mailing list.

Upcoming Study Abroad Deadlines

Dear Students,

I just want to mention the upcoming May 15th deadline for several College of Engineering study abroad opportunities for 2026!

Engineering/Public Health India: Grand Challenges Impact Lab (Winter quarter) – This unique, project-based program guides students in addressing Grand Challenges (GCs), the big problems facing humanity: things like food security, clean energy, and poverty. Students work in interdisciplinary teams to understand and address GCs, working closely with local organizations and mentors who are experts on the topic.

Nagoya University Exchange in Nagoya, Japan (Spring+Summer quarters) – Our newest exchange, allowing students to take English-language engineering courses as well as Japanese language/culture courses.

Technical University of Berlin Exchange in Berlin, Germany (Spring+Summer quarters) – TU Berlin is located in Germany’s capital city in the heart of Europe. Students may take English- or German-language engineering courses and may potentially arrange research placement.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Exchange (Winter+Spring quarters) – HKUST is a leading international research university. Students may take English-language engineering courses as well as language, humanities, or social science courses.

Tohoku University Exchange in Sendai, Japan (Spring+Summer quarters) – A university experience that places selected students in English-language research groups, as well as allowing them to take engineering or culture classes. Note that this program is perhaps our most independent, requiring self-motivation to learn about potential research groups before you are admitted! Continue reading
