Wonderful study abroad opportunity in Amsterdam, Spring 2024, Art History, A&H credits (no prerequisites at all)

Dear Students,

I would like to draw your attention to this amazing Study Abroad opportunity to study the art and culture of the Netherlands, including architecture, design, urban planning, and social, anthropological and ecological aspects of Dutch culture. You would be living (and biking) like a local in Amsterdam, and visiting many towns, such as The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Haarlem, as well as cities in Belgium, such as Antwerp, Brussels, and Ghent.

Please see the attached brochure for links and details, and note that for all three courses you can receive A&H credits. No art history or humanities prerequisites, but applicants should motivate why they would like to study art and culture from the Netherlands. The deadline is 11/15/23, but earlier submissions are encouraged and the priority deadline is 10/25. Also good to know for international students: this quarter of study abroad, including all fees, is cheaper than one quarter on campus.

As a Dutchman myself, I would love to share with you my native culture and show you some of the marvels of art and history come to life in their original context.

Please feel free to email me with inquiries: marek@uw.edu

Study Abroad Winter/Spring 2024 Opportunities

Dear study abroad interest list,

I wanted to let you know that several humanities and social science-focused programs are still open for Winter and/or Spring 2024.

While we are past the deadline for College of Engineering programs, UW works with several external “partner” programs (listed under “UW Partner and Direct Enrollment Programs” here) that have deadlines such as October or November 2023 for Winter and/or Spring 2024. These programs would not have an engineering curriculum, but students could easily find A&H, SSc, DIV, and sometimes math/science. If you plan ahead with an academic adviser, you may decide that you are able to complete these requirements abroad.

You may especially find this beneficial if you are finishing up your freshman year. These program deadlines take place after placement results are released in August, so you will be able to plan ahead knowing what degree requirements you must complete in the upcoming year. You could also get in touch with an academic adviser from your new department before the deadline.

Let me know if you have any questions—always happy to talk about study abroad. Sarah Pauling <spauling@uw.edu>

Winter/Spring Study Abroad Deadline May 15th

As a reminder, four CoE study abroad programs have deadlines on May 15! Note that typical semester dates abroad differ from UW quarter dates.

Engineering India: Graned Challenges Impact Lab (GCIL): UW Winter quarter. Grand Challenges (GCs) are the big problems facing humanity — things like food security, clean energy, and poverty. The Grand Challenge Impact Lab (UW-GCIL) is a UW study abroad experience that empowers students to address GCs. An interdisciplinary experience that allows a cohort of UW students to investigate social solutions, develop a practical approach, and propose your plan to NGOs at the end of the quarter.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST): Takes place during WIN+SPR quarters. A leading international research university dedicated to the pursuit of new knowledge in science, engineering, business, humanities and social science, and the education of tomorrow’s leaders. The university campus occupies a stunning 150-acre (60-hectare) site overlooking Clear Water Bay, and is less than a 30 minute drive from central Hong Kong. See English-language courses here.

Tohoku UniversityTakes place during SPR+SUM quarters. Tohoku University is also known for its strong orientation toward academic research; students in the exchange will participate in a specialized research track for international students. See academic information here. Continue reading

GCIL India 2024 recruiting UG and Grad students

We are also holding a CoE GCIL info session tomorrow on April 20th from 12-1pm, held in Loew 215 (food provided). This info session will have a focus on the interdisciplinary nature of the program (they are specifically looking for a mix of majors!). If your students are interested in exploring how their field can make a positive social impact while working with other engineers and non-engineers alike, this session may be a good place to start!

If you have any students interested in study abroad and global engagement opportunities, consider whether it may be worth pointing them towards the GCIL India program. There are a few upcoming information sessions, see below for details:
