Invitation to guest lecture; Wei Qin from the University of Oklahoma

Dear all,

You are invited to the talk by Dr. Wi Qin on 21 March 2024 at 3 pm in More Hall Room 110. Title and abstract are displayed below and Dr. Wei’s CV is attached.

Wei Qin

Assistant Professor

School of Biological Sciences, Institute for Environmental Genomics

University of Oklahoma

Title: Unexpected genomic and physiological diversity in ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms

Biography: Wei earned his PhD in Environmental Microbiology under the supervision of Dave Stahl at UW CEE in 2017. Subsequently, he was awarded a Simons Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarship in Marine Microbial Ecology and worked with Anitra Ingalls at the University of Washington School of Oceanography. In 2021, he started his Assistant Professor position in Microbiology at the University of Oklahoma. His research is centered on the ecology, physiology, molecular biology, biogeochemistry, and greenhouse gas emissions of nitrogen cycle microorganisms.

Abstract: Four major and phylogenetically distinct lineages of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM): ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), beta-and gamma-proteobacterial ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (β- and γ-AOB), and complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox), together contribute to one of the largest nitrogen fluxes in the global nitrogen budget.  As one of the most ubiquitous and abundant Continue reading

Civil Engineering Internship at the City of Renton

Hello,

The City of Renton is offering an engineering internship for one year, full-time during summer and part-time during school to Civil/Environmental engineering students going into their senior year or graduate year. This internship will be primarily with the Surface Water Engineering section in the City. The intern will assist Surface Water engineers with managing construction on ongoing projects, and perform analyses in support of efforts to map drainage areas for existing stormwater facilities.

CEE RSO Showcase – Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Joint Unveiling

Hello CEE Community!

You are invited to the University of Washington Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Joint Unveiling Presentation! This event takes place on Friday, March 29th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM in the Maple Hall Great Room. The presentation will include introductions by the club officers, an overview of the design and fabrication process, and sponsor acknowledgments for each team. Additionally, Steel Bridge will do a live demonstration of our bridge assembly process! Dinner will be provided. All club members, alumni, friends, family, UW staff/faculty, donors, and industry professionals are welcome to attend! A Zoom link will be provided for those who wish to attend remotely.

We hope that you attend our Joint Unveiling, so we can share with you both team’s hard work before we compete at the annual ASCE Student Symposium held at the University of British Columbia the following weekend (April 6th – 7th). This is the perfect culmination of our progress throughout the academic year.

In order to RSVP, please fill out this brief form (also linked below). This is to ensure we have enough seating and food for everyone! Once you’ve indicated your intent to attend, we will follow up with event reminders and a Zoom link.
