CEE’s February Work from Work Day! || ☕🍵🥐🍇 || Tuesday, February 13, 2024 | MOR 110 9-11 am

Dear CEE friends,

The CEE Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) will be hosting the 2nd Work From Work (WFW) event for the Winter quarter on Tuesday, February 13, and we would love for you all to join us.

These WFW events, graciously funded by the department, are open to everyone affiliated with the CEE department (researchers, students, staff & faculty) and are meant to build a deeper sense of community within the department.

Kindly stop by MOR 110 between 9-11 A.M. to get a fresh brew, pick up some pastries, fresh fruits, protein bars, and hopefully stay back for some low-stakes interaction.

We encourage you to come along with your coffee & snacks receptacles as we strive to cut down on our single-use waste.

Hoping to see you all there!

SPR24 Registration Planning

Hi CEE Majors,

We just made a canvas post with instructions for registering and planning for SPR24 classes. We had some IT issues with our canvas page last week, so if you aren’t able to access it, please let us know! In the meantime, the post is duplicated below – let us know if you have any questions !

————————————————-

This week’s post is all about preparing for SPR24 registration, which begins on Friday, February 9. There is a lot of information here, so please make sure to review everything.

SPR24 Registration & Planning

The SPR24 time schedule is now live, and Period I registration begins on Friday, February 9. If you’re unsure of your registration date, you can check it here or on your MyUW portal. When planning, reference the Current Undergraduate Student Page for degree requirements and projected course offerings in CEE.

SPR24 Notices:

    • CEE Capstones: While some of our capstones are already underway, there are four spring-quarter capstone options available as well – CEE 441 (Transportation), CEE 442 (Structures/geotech), CEE 444 (Hydraulics/Hydrology) and CEE 445 (Environmental). For a detailed description of each capstone project, check the “Files” page on canvas.
    • CEE 490: Air Pollution Control will likely no longer be offered next quarter. If this changes, we will let you know, but for now, plan on taking an alternate class.
    • CEE 378: Structural Analysis is essential for all students interested in pursuing a structural and/or Continue reading

SPR24 Course Cancellation: CEE 490 Air Pollution Control

Hello,

We just received notice that CEE 490: Air Pollution Control (4cr) is likely to be cancelled in SPR24.

There is still an outside chance it will be offered but for planning purposes with registration right around the corner, you should find an alternate class to take.

CEE 490 is one of the only 4cr Technical Electives so if this cancellation leaves your plan 1cr shy of TE or E&S Electives, please let us know asap so we can help you find a solution ceadvice@uw.edu.

One option would be to take CEE 480: Air Quality Modeling (3cr) and add a 1cr CEE 499 Independent Study to make up for the lost credit.

Some other classes that may be of interest are our CEE 498 offerings:

  • CEE 498: Building Energy and Habitability (3cr, Reed)
  • CEE 498: Transportation Energy and Sustainability (3cr, MacKenzie)

CEE Water/Environmental Seminar this Thursday, February 9 at 3:30 in More Hall 225

Hi CEE community,

Please join us this Thursday, February 9 at 3:30 in More Hall room 225 for this week’s water seminar where PhD candidate Abby Kargol from the School of Environment & Forest Sciences will present on how microorganisms living near plant roots can be used for both water treatment and water reuse for biomass production. See the abstract for her talk below!

Wastewater infiltration systems for high-volume secondary treatment and water recovery

Abstract

Wastewater treatment is vital for the protection of water resources. One method of treatment, rhizotreatment, uses the microorganisms living on and near plant roots to remove compounds from wastewater. It also presents an opportunity for reuse and resource recovery when the water is used to irrigate crops. We tested the use of poplar trees for simultaneous wastewater treatment and water reuse for biomass production. Lab-scale reactors were planted with hybrid poplar trees and irrigated with either synthetic wastewater or clean water at up to 67mm/day. Bare soil reactors with no trees were irrigated with synthetic wastewater as an additional control. Water and soil samples were collected at the end of each experimental period. Water was tested for nitrate, Continue reading

Internships and full-time positions with Skanska USA Civil – apply now!

Hi all,

We were just contacted by Skanska and they have LOTS of internships and jobs they would like to fill with great CEE students and grads. They are looking for folks to work on their “big 3” projects in the Seattle area:

  1. Lynnwood Link Extension (L300) – finish up a $900 million light rail job from Shoreline to Lynnwood. It’s nearly done, be there as the complete the project and open it to the public! We have had 10+ UW interns and fill-time employees on this project over the years. This really is the light rail that UW built.
  2. I-405 Brickyard – $600 million of work on I-405 in the Bothell area including new toll lanes, direct access ramps, and widening I-405.
  3. Portage Bay Bridge – Fix up SR 520 from Montlake to I-5. This $1.4 billion job starts as soon as WSDOT can find the money.

Do your internship on some iconic Seattle/PNW infrastructure. For the rest of you life, you could tell your family and friends, “I helped build that.”
