Exhibitor Registration is open for Discovery Days!

Dear CEE Community,

Discovery Days welcomes thousands of fourth through eighth grade students from all over Washington state to engage with Engineering at the University of Washington! The event is on May 2 & 3, here at the Seattle Campus!

Each engineering department is encouraging students, research staff, and faculty to participate by hosting an exhibit both days that teaches fourth through eighth graders about engineering and cutting-edge research!

Here are a few tips before signing up:

  • Take a look at the attached event program from 2019 (the last time we held the event in person) to see the kinds of exhibits that participated in the past.
  • Visit the exhibitor website to plan an engaging, safe, and age-appropriate exhibit.
  • All exhibitors will receive a Discovery Days t-shirt and lunch on event days.

Here is the link for EXHIBITOR REGISTRATION (or https://forms.gle/cQC2uwqqEYGMz4EE9) for Discovery Days!

If you have any questions, please reach out to me and Hazel Chan (cc’d) – we are the CEE departmental coordinators for this year’s event, and are happy to help with anything! We look forward to seeing you at the event.

2024 NHERI REU Application Deadline Extended

Deadline Extended for the
2024 NHERI REU Program

Dear Undergrads,

The extended deadline for applications is Sunday, February 25

REU program overview. Each year, NHERI facilities host a total of 33 undergraduates to participate in natural hazards research, studying ways to mitigate damage from earthquakes, tsunamis, windstorms and hurricanes — in fields that include coastal engineering, data management, cyberinfrastructure, post-event reconnaissance, simulation and modeling, and social science research. Typical student majors include engineering, computer science, architecture, public policy, and social science.

During this NSF-funded summer experience, NHERI REU students work with faculty and graduate students to conduct research at one of NHERI’s 11 sites:

·         The Wall of Wind at Florida International University

·         Real-Time Multi-Directional Natural Hazards Simulation Facility (RTMD) at Lehigh University

·         The O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State University

·         The NHERI SimCenter at University of California, Berkeley

·         The Center for Geotechnical Modeling (CGM) at University of California, Davis Continue reading

CEE Climate Survey coming next week

Dear CEE Community:

Next Tuesday February 13 we are launching a CEE department-wide climate survey. Please do the survey! We need everyone’s input on their experiences, the good and the bad, to help us continue to make the CEE community as welcoming and inclusive as possible. We want to hear from all of you!

A link to the survey will be sent by email Tuesday morning and it should take about 10 minutes to complete. We will allocate time for you to do it in meetings and classes. More details on the survey, including draw prizes, are below.

Thanks for your help.

As part of CEE’s strategic plan we are commiting to improving the experience of all CEE community members. This annual survey allows us to measure progress and prioritize areas for improvement to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, language, (dis)ability, age, political perspective, or other groups.

CEE will do this survey annually. Results will be used to help us develop actionable strategies and to monitor our progress toward a stronger and more supportive CEE community. We will report back to the CEE community on the results of this survey in Spring 2024.

To limit participation to CEE community members, you will need to be logged in with your UW NetID.  Continue reading
