Electives

There are three types of elective rotations: Subspecialty Electives, Other Electives, and Selectives:

  • Subspecialty Electives: These include electives previously labeled as A or B in addition to some of those previously labeled as “other” electives (e.g., CICU). A full list of the subspecialty electives is available below.
  • Other Electives: These are non-subspecialty elective rotations (e.g., advocacy, research, teaching, procedures, away rotations, etc.). They do not count towards your subspecialty requirement, but they do count towards your Individualized Curriculum requirement. Not all tracks have Other Electives, given that many track-specific rotations are part of your Individualized Curriculum. For residents who have an Other Elective, we will reach out to you individually to plan your rotation.
  • Selectives: Categorical and REACH residents will have “Selective” rotations in their R2/R3 years where they get to rank their preference of an inpatient/ICU service rotation to help meet their educational goals. Selective rotations include PICU, SCHNICU, NB+, HMC (Wards and PICU) and Wards Senior. Outside of Selectives, senior residents will already have time in each of these rotations, except for SCHNICU, which is only available as a Selective
